Sometimes those in the elevators are better than those in the august halls of Academia.

Is this elevator going Up or Down (historically speaking) ?
Did anyone accidentally hit the Emergency Button, putting the elevator on hold, between Floors ? Is this a conversatonal history of amicability or catastrophe ? Elevators, like history can be quite Suspenseful.

As Dante put it in his description of the descent into hell, sometimes the way down is the way up. It is a paradox: in order for Dante to arrive at the mountain of Purgatory and then Paradise he has to go deeper and deeper into hell. I wonder if Dante would have taken an elevator had one been availabe in medieval times.

Before I was left crippled by the dysfunctional Worker's Comp sytem of Texas, I always took the stairwells. I enjoyed the exercise.
Dante, I think was a Walker-Quester , as well. And, being a Man of his Times, perhaps, would have thought the Elevator to be a con-Trap-tion of the horned and pointy-tailed Devil. Worthy of by-passing for a Stairway to Heaven.
