February 9th 1950; United States Senator Joe McCarthy accused more than 200 staff in the State Department of being members of the Communist Party. He made the startling allegation in a public speech in Wheeling, West Virginia, saying the State Department was infested with communists and brandished a sheet of paper which purportedly contained the traitors' names. Senator McCarthy told the Ohio county women's Republican Club that Secretary of State Dean Acheson knew the names of 205 people who were in his words still "working in and shaping the policy of the State Department".

Undoubtedly the McCarthy era of the fifties was one of the most deplorable and dishonorable chapters of American History. In the name of patriotism and an anti-Communist ideology false slanderous accusations were pronounced, professional reputations were sullied, and careers ruined. Here too history cannot be ignored or we will be condemned to repeat it. We are seeing the renaissance of such a shabby attitude in today’s Tea Party fanatical ideological stance ready to attack and besmirch even a sitting President, all in the name of “true patriotism.” For shame!
