Nose scanning techniques could sniff out criminals

bazaar01_400We already have iris and fingerprint scanning but noses could be an even better method of identification, says a study from the University of Bath, UK. The researchers scanned noses in 3D and characterised them by tip, ridge profile and the nation, or area between the eyes. They found 6 main nose types: Roman, Greek, Nubian, hawk, snub and turn-up.

Since they are hard to conceal, the study says, noses would work well for identification in covert surveillance. The researchers say noses have been overlooked in the growing field of biometrics, studies into ways of identifying distinguishing traits in people. "Noses are prominent facial features and yet their use as a biometric has been largely unexplored," said the University of Bath's Dr Adrian Evans.

"Ears have been looked at in detail, eyes have been looked at in terms of iris recognition but the nose has been neglected." The researchers used a system called PhotoFace, developed by researchers at the University of the West of England, Bristol and Imperial College, London, for the 3D scans.

Sniffing a …crime!

bazaar02_400Family covers up nude snow woman

Maria Conneran and her family sculpted Venus de Milo in last week's snow outside their Colonia Boulevard home in Rahway. Her mother, Elisa Gonzalez, called it, "curvaceous, bodacious and booty-vicious."

But Sgt. Dominick Sforza says police received an anonymous complaint. Gonzalez says the officer was apologetic and appreciative of the sculpture's assets. The officer asked the family to dress the snow woman.

The family added a green bikini top and a blue sarong bottom. The family took it down on Monday because it was starting to melt in the warmer air.

Ticket tyrants even target flooded cars

bazaar03CARS left half-submerged by dirty water after a river burst its banks had parking tickets slapped on their windscreens as soon as the floodwater subsided. The three cars were parked close to the notorious flood-prone riverbank in York city centre when torrential rain caused the River Ouse to overflow.

Dirty water seeping through doors and windows ruined the interiors of the cars which were unreachable and in danger of being washed away. But first thing on Monday, once the floodwater had subsided, an eagle-eyed parking inspector wasted no time in issuing tickets because the vehicles had been left on double yellow lines. Shocked pub landlord Shaun Binns said: “The inspector must have seen the cars had been flooded and you’d think they’d have a bit of compassion.”

A council spokeswoman claimed parking attendants had been “unaware” some cars had been flooded. She said if the owners provided evidence that their vehicles had been submerged in river water, they could successfully appeal against the tickets.
