Neanderthal 'make-up' containers discovered

bizarre01_02Scientists claim to have the first persuasive evidence that Neanderthals wore "body paint" 50,000 years ago. The team report in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) that shells containing pigment residues were Neanderthal make-up containers. Scientists unearthed the shells at two archaeological sites in the Murcia province of southern Spain.

The team says its find buries "the view of Neanderthals as half-wits" and shows they were capable of symbolic thinking. Professor Joao Zilhao, the archaeologist from Bristol University in the UK, who led the study, said that he and his team had examined shells that were used as containers to mix and store pigments.

Black sticks of the pigment manganese, which may have been used as body paint by Neanderthals, have previously been discovered in Africa. "But this is the first secure evidence for their use of cosmetics," he said the news. "The use of these complex recipes is new. It's more than body painting." The scientists found lumps of a yellow pigment that they say was possibly used as a foundation. They also found red powder mixed up with flecks of a reflective brilliant black mineral.

Swedish cops liberate jealous wife from tree house

bizarre02_01A Swedish wife who reckoned her son's tree house was the best place to check hubby's mope for evidence he'd been playing away had to be freed by police from the elevated bolt-hole. The unnamed woman from Skåne, southern Sweden, apparently got a visit from the green-eyed monster early this morning, and snuck out of the house to scour her other half's text messages.

The availability of the phone proved handy when she got trapped in the structure, and she called for law enforcement assistance. Martin Carlsson from Skåne police told the news: “We helped her down after a while. She thanked us and ran back into the house where her husband was still sleeping.”

Carlsson - who described the call-out as "probably one of the strangest I have been involved in" - confirmed the woman had "found a text message that she didn’t like", but details of the couple's current marital status is unknown.

Blagojevich: 'I'm blacker than Barack Obama'

bizarre03_01Ousted Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich says he's "blacker than Barack Obama" and tells Esquire magazine that he was a real person in a political arena dominated by phonies. Blagojevich, referring to the president as "this guy," says Obama was elected based simply on hope.

"What the (expletive)? Everything he's saying's on the teleprompter," Blagojevich told the magazine for a story in its February issue, which hits newsstands Jan. 19. "I'm blacker than Barack Obama. I shined shoes. I grew up in a five-room apartment. My father had a little laundromat in a black community not far from where we lived," Blagojevich said. "I saw it all growing up."

The White House refused to comment.

bizarre04Man jumped in the river after argument

A man jumped into the Illinois River on Friday night after an argument with his girlfriend. The couple was sitting in a car in the 100 block of State Street about 10 p.m. when the man exited the vehicle and jumped into the open water.
A police officer on the scene was able to talk the man out of the water, which came up to his chin. The man was treated by paramedics. It was unclear Saturday whether he was transported to a hospital.
