Walk the Line
James Mangold
I am not a massive fan of Johnny Cash, in fact I am not very familiar with his music, but I went to see this biopic starring Joaquin Phoenix as the man in black. This is basically a love story between Mr Cash and June Carter with the backdrop of his rise to fame from a cotton field to his most famous concert at Folsom Prison 1968.

If Walk the Line is a biopic then it was disappointing because the cause and effect of his emotional downfall was summarised rather than examined. For a man whose immense talent was almost lost to a drug induced paranoia and rage, we only got a glimpse of the poor relationship with his father, guilt over his brother's early death and his hate of the RAF. While it concentrated on the more "Love conquers all" relationship with June Carter played by Reese Witherspoon.

Given that it did focus on the love story between the leads, it is something which worked very well. Both Joaquin and Reese performed all their own songs to an exceptional standard and the chemistry between the two was a "Ring of Fire". There were the usual inclusion of the stars of the time such as Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis and Waylon Jennings.

It has already been awarded with Golden Globes and Oscar nominations and it is difficult to see the Best Actress award going to anyone other than Miss Witherspoon. You will see better films this year and it's a lengthy showing at over 2 hours, but all Man in Black fans should go and you won't feel cheated of your ticket money. I can honestly say you will leave smiling and with tired legs from all that foot tapping to some great music.
