When some people reacted to Washington’s decision to establish a missiles defense system in Europe – mainly in Poland and the Czech Republic – they were nearly called traitors, and that’s because the big plan of the Bush administration. Like too many other decisions this one was covered up beneath the threat of terrorism. Amazingly, even though the plans were ready long before 9/11, everything came out after the hit on the N.Y. World Trade Center, which made some of the conspiracy theories sound more realistic.

The excuse for the missile umbrella over Europe was equally pathetic; the Americans were creating the umbrella to protect Europe from …Iran! Please, the next time you find a map, check where Poland borders with Iran! When the Bush administration was pushing this missile umbrella plan, I wrote about a poem written by a famous Greek poet in the beginning of the nineteenth century. Kavafis is the name of the poet and in his poem “Waiting for the Barbarians he says: “Because night is here but the barbarians have not come. And some people arrived from the borders, and said that there are no longer any barbarians. And now what shall become of us without any barbarians? Those people were some kind of solution. “

It is a magnificent poem worth reading. These are the last verses but they explain exactly what the Bush administration was planning to do, and I’m saying that without hinting at any conspiracy theories. Bush, Cheney and the rest of the gang were, and still are representing and lobbying for the weapons and oil industry in the USA. This is no a secret. The best way to empower, strengthen and of course bring major profits to this industry – which had suffered a fall in sales over the last three decades – was to bring back the fear of war. Despite all theories, I don’t think that the terrorist hit was calculated, even though it gave a great opportunity for profit. What happened in N.Y. was unexpected and that’s why they stuck with their original plan until they could understand and make a profit from it. And that was the rebirth of the cold war. The cold war brought fear all around the world and in this case fear brought profit!

On the same time the mysterious new Russian leader, far away from Yeltsin’s style and the re-born nationalism in Russia, gave the Bush administration and his neo-republicans weapons dealers the chance they were asking for. Like I said the war against terrorism just opened up new opportunities and perhaps added more excuses to the act. Here it was; Reagan’s Star Wars plan, reborn with a different name. This time it was even more aggressive since the old Soviet allies had gone over to the other side, ready to support the most extreme plans against their old foe. Amazingly some of those old Soviet allies have gone as far as to consider making everything Russian illegal, ignoring the fact that Russia has changed as much as they have. Today’s Poland has nothing to do with the Soviet era’s Poland and the same goes for Russia; today’s Russia has nothing to do with Stalin’s Russia.

The whole plan had nothing to do with a protective missile umbrella over Europe. In Poland these missiles were obviously targeting Russia and that was at least stupid with the new geopolitical situation. The danger for Europe with missiles coming from Iran is as true as the stories of Saddam’s weapons of mass destruction. Iran has missiles, but just like Pakistan their missiles are good for a few miles and before they are even triggered, most likely the USA will have flattened the country. The Bush administration used Poland’s and the Czech Republic’s leaders’ stupid hate against Russia to sell and make profits! But mind you, the USA did not profit, on the contrary, the American people paid part of the bill, with Poland and the Czech Republic paying the rest.

The good news is that Obama’s administration decided to stop the plan. They decided to terminate a stupid and expensive idea that would profit the old gang, during a period were the American people are suffering through one of the worst economic crises. This decision is perhaps one of the most serious the Obama administration has taken and it is a decision that, at least to me, should show Europe that Obama means good and he needs all the help he can get to accomplish his work.
