no matter where I go
I will never fall down
and not get up again,
until the day I die,
no matter where I go,
I will try again,
and again,
even after I die,
I hope
I’ll try...

Epitaph
Here I lie,
All my bones
And my head.
Under these stones,
Hopefully,
Dead.
Emanuel Paparella

Epitaph in a Thurmont, Maryland, cemetery:
REMEMBER MAN AS YOU WALK BY,
AS YOU ARE NOW, SO ONCE WAS I,
AS I AM NOW, SO SHALL YOU BE,
REMEMBER THIS AND FOLLOW ME.
To which someone replied by writing on the tombstone:
TO FOLLOW YOU I'LL NOT CONSENT
UNTIL I KNOW WHICH WAY YOU WENT
Jonathan Swift had it on target when he observed that "it is dangerous writing on marble, where one cannot make errata, or mend in a second edition."
