--Somebody knew!
--What do you mean?
--“Listen now, House of David: are you not satisfied with trying the patience of men without trying the patience of my God, too? The Lord himself, therefore, will give you a sign. It is this: the maiden is with child and will soon give birth to a son whom she will call Immanuel.” (Isaiah 7: 13-14)
--I seeeeeee, now I understand the reason for A.C. and A.D. after important dates. Somebody did notice his first coming. How about the second?
--Get out from under those covers and go read Isaiah at the library as was suggested last time around.

The Anno Domini system was devised by the monk Dionysius Exiguus, while in Rome, working on a table to establish future dates for Easter. When he devised his table, Julian calendar years were identified by regnal years and by naming the consuls who held office that year. He wished to replace the Diocletian years that had been used, because he did not wish to continue the memory of a persecutor of Christians. In the process, he determined a year for the beginning of the life of Jesus.[12][13] He gave a method to calculate "annos ab incarnatione Domini nostri Jesu Christi" (Latin for years since the incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ).[14] He himself stated that the then current year was 525 years since the incarnation of Jesus.[14]

Evidently it took a while for people to notice.
