The word 'AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome)' appeared in our vocabulary sometime in early eighties and since then it has killed over 30 million people. AIDS, despite its controversy in the beginning, doesn’t recognize sex, education, religion, colour or wealth; AIDS kills indiscriminately!
The only line of defence against AIDS is the hope in science and information. Information on what causes it and how it can be transmitted. One out of three people in the countries of G8, supposedly the most effective countries in the world this minute, have no idea about AIDS. In Africa whole nations are in danger because of AIDS.
In 2006, 33.3 million people were HIV positive and the numbers keep increasing. Up until 2005, AIDS has left behind some 12 million orphaned African children. Remember, there is no cure for AIDS. There are drugs that can slow down the HIV virus, and slow down the damage to your immune system, but there is no way to "clear" the HIV out of your body.
Remember: HIV can be passed on through infected blood, semen, vaginal fluids or breast milk. The most common ways HIV is passed on are: sex without a condom with someone living with HIV, sharing infected needles, syringes or other injecting drug equipment, from an HIV-positive mother (to her child) during pregnancy, childbirth or breastfeeding. Always use a condom when having vaginal or anal sex.
Remember: HIV cannot be passed on through: Kissing or touching, spitting, coughing or sneezing, toilet seats, swimming pools, or shared facilities or utensils.
Remember: 33.3 million people live with HIV worldwide 30.8 million adults 15.4 million women 2.5 million children under 15
Remember: 2.5 million total new cases for 2007 2.1 million of them are adults 420,000 of them are children under 15
Remember: 2.1 million total deaths for the year 2007 till now 1.7 million adult deaths for the year 2007 till now 330,000 deaths among children under 15 for the year 2007 till now
Remember numbers don’t kill, ignorance does!
