In the heat of the day they suffer,
The sky is glowing orange like hell
And they huddle on a beach
Waiting for boats to arrive
As the flames steadily
Approach.

Dirty smoke fills the sky
And the stench of burnt koalas
And kangaroos reaches the shore,
And they stare at the distance
In numbed silence with
Bandannas covering their faces,
And thoughts of their holidays
And daily cares melt away
Because their world
Is burning and they don’t
Know if they will survive today,
And their existence suddenly
Seems so fragile.
