I saw two Black birds Fly overhead, And the wind Howled through Dead streets past Closed shop shutters, Peeling paint, graffiti, Rusted street signs And torn yellow Posters.
Crumpled beer cans Scraped along the streets Pushed by the wind, And the two black birds Settled on rotting Power poles Turning their heads Sideways watching A single red flower That grew Through broken Paving stones And shimmered Among the dead Grey, steel And cement.
It was the only Thing of beauty That grew in this Derelict town, And I clung on To the hope That it offered.
