A major principal for the mythical Mario Puzo’s Godfather (Vito Corleone) was that the immediate family (first and second degree relatives) are on the top of the familia business, no questions asked. In the very real contemporary Greek politics Mitsotakis familia is the equivalent of the mythical Corleone familia and first, second, third even eighth degree relatives accompanied by godsons, goddaughters and all kind of …groomsmen and fake relationships, enjoy the glories and profits of power. And while in other democratic countries this might be called nepotism in Greece is called politics as usual or Mitsotakis family.

kou001_400The latest star of the family is the prince nephew of the Prime Minister, Kyriakos ‘Koulis’ Mitsotakis and son of Kyriakos ‘Koulis’ Mitsotakis, member of the parliament and former secretary of state, Dora Bakoyannis. Don’t get confused with the name, same mafia. Therefore the nephew is called Kostas Bakoyiannis and yes, you guessed well, he is the mayor of Athens, sponsored by New Democracy – the right-wing party led by his uncle Kyriakos ‘Koulis’ Mitsotakis – and hopeful Koulis in the place of Koulis in both, the party and the PM seat.

Now we cleared the relationship of the Mitsotakis family with nepotism lets see what else – except the blood line of course – there people have in common and to make it clear we definitely don’t talk about intellect. You guessed well. Corruption. In Greek conscious the word corruption is synonym to the name Mitsotakis. The late Godfather and pater-familia of the Mitsotakis family, Konstantinos Mitsotakis is known for his hypothetically very rich bribe to defect from the centre party and consequently to start a series of events that led to a military coup and seven years of a ruthless dictatorship.

His son, Kyriakos ‘Koulis’ Mitsotakis, the prime minister, will always be connected with the Siemens bribery scandal and his wife (among other familia members) with the Panama money laundry scandal but the prince nephew, while the latest addition, looks bright, a champion with an even …better future in corruption.

Hew spent 2 million euros, in a country with 19% unemployment and two in five families living in poverty with no money even for food and over 30,000 homeless only in Athens, to create a caricature “walking street” in the middle of the busiest streets of the capital and plant grass in the most central square of Athens, Omonia. Everything to fail in less than two weeks. But the best part was his excuses for all the waste and failure. He blamed a …caterpillar! For the grass. We still wait to hear about the “walking streets”. Oh wait; he had an excuse for that as well. Not everything can be successful.

There is no immediate corruption in this case, no bribery or money exchange -even though nobody knows whom and in what degree relatives profited from these 2 million euros BUT in a country financially drowning because of state corruption and serious mistakes in decisions regarding the economy from his uncle the prime minister, corruption it is. It is also extreme stupidity but …nobody has ever connected Mitsotakis family with intellectuality, neither has anybody ever said that they care about people outside the familia.

Just like the Corleones.

And that is corruption!
And this is Greece today!
