Communism failed mainly because there was no debate, and there was no communication. That is Communism is a system where the government controls everything from healthcare and education, to housing and business. But, out of fear of punishment and losing their jobs, people in Communist nations tended to discuss basketball or soccer or baseball statistics, but they don't discuss innovation, business ideas, or things in education that need fixing. And the system collapsed in most states.

libcon001_400In “Western” democracies, conservatives and liberals constantly debate what laws should govern business and how to maintain a good education system or banking system or housing system or healthcare system.

Now Communists usually tell Western democracies that democracy is about materialism and making money and material wealth. Communists argue that life should be “spiritual” pursuit, one of utopia and harmony among people, and not about material wealth and having more numbers in your bank account than your neighbor.

There is an alternative to Communism and Democracy, something I like to call “Tribalism.” Some people call it “Nationalism” but I prefer the term “Tribalism.” What is Tribalism?

Latin America, Islamic nations, China, Japan, Korea, and many nations in Asia use a political model I would call “Tribalism.” That is, rather than pursue material wealth, local governments encourage people to pursue “spiritual” ideals and to adhere to strict ethical and moral standards.

That is, in Tribalist systems, you will have an oligarchy of sorts that controls a lot of business and housing and banking and all the essentials. But that oligarchy (could be a royal family or a business clan) will use the media and propaganda to promote “correct” behavior among commoners, such as “respect for the elders” or “sitting straight” or “not being allowed to gossip about the elders” and so on, and such ethical guidelines will usually prevent social disruptions.

But we in the West are lucky enough to discuss, debate and make concessions on what tend to be different ways of viewing how the economy and society works. So here's how Western democracy works:

Conservative views (tendency)

Liberal views (tendency)

Free enterprise and finance

Conservatives tend to believe that there should be no rules governing business creation and banking and finance.

Conservatives tend to believe that people should be allowed to create business at will, that banks should be allowed to loan at will, and that each bank should be free to charge whatever interest rates it wishes.

Liberals tend to believe that some “stupid people” or “greedy people” should be prevented from doing “stupid things” with business. Same goes for finance.

That is, while Conservatives tend to believe that business owners and finance workers should read the press and that the free press (and academia) should guide them in their decisions. The Liberals tend to believe that the government should set up rules (often knee-jerk rules) to prevent the free market from collapsing.

Taxes

Conservatives tend to believe that the government should spend nothing, and that people should be taxed nothing.

Hardned conservatives tend to believe that the government should operate on “donations” or a “community chest.” Softer conservatives tend to believe in some government spending, but tend to want to take it easy with taxes.

Liberals tend to believe that taxes are part of the social contract.

You, as an adult, pay taxes. Those taxes go to educating your kids and providing cheap healthcare for you, and provide for your retirement pension, help fix the roads you drive in, and help build projects (construction or otherwise) that will help the economy grow and will serve the community as a whole.

Social welfare

Conservatives tend to believe that if you look hard enough, you will get a job.

Conservatives also tend to believe that your paycheck should cover your needs.

Liberals tend to believe that some people can not find jobs for various reasons (like single mothers or people who are too old to work and so on).

Liberals also tend to believe that some people work 3 jobs yet their paychecks do not cover daily expenses.

So liberals believe in helping out those in need, be it those who are chronically ill, or those who live in poor neighborhoods and have trouble finding a job that pays enough to cover the bills.

Job creation

Conservatives tend to believe that if you allow people to create any business they want, job creation will naturally follow.

Liberals tend to believe that the current business climate does not provide enough jobs.

So the liberals believe that the government should create jobs (or force companies to create jobs) to lower unemployment.

Immigration

Conservatives tend to believe in “closed borders” and tend to believe that the country will thrive if outsiders don't infiltrate the nation (and our way of life).

Conservatives tend to believe immigrants should only work where they are most needed, and should leave the country as soon as they're done working.

Liberals tend to believe in “open borders” and tend to believe that “diversity is strength.”

Liberals often use the example of the Eastern and Central European immigration waves (Jewish and non-Jewish) of the 1900-1930s that brought the very best scientists and thinkers to the United States.

So while Conservatives tend to believe open borders don't bring the very best from the nations, Liberals tend to believe that you can't cherry pick the very best, and that if you flood the gates, the very best will sneak in as well.

Public health issues

Conservatives tend to believe that private hospitals and private charities should exclusively own the healthcare system.

Liberals believe that people should be allowed subsidized healthcare in private hospitals and free healthcare in public hospitals.

Conservatives tend to say that subsidized healthcare leads to healthcare fraud, liberals tend to argue that fraud is punished by the law (if caught) and that healthcare is mostly about saving lives.

Education

Conservatives tend to believe “less is more” when it comes to school budgets, and that schools should operate independently as “non-for-profits.”

That is Conservatives tend to believe that each school should decide what to teach, and how to raise funds. And Conservatives tend to believe that schools should not rely on the government exclusively for funds.

Liberals tend to believe that education is “not a business” and that the government should intervene when it comes to curriculum planning and budget.

Some Liberals believe in “equal opportunity for all” and believe that both public and private schools should use and imposed curriculum and should follow strict guidelines, and that everyone in the nation should be taught the same curriculum in schools operating on similar budgets.

Construction and real estate

Conservatives tend to believe that people should be free to build almost anywhere they want, and to sell housing at any price they want, or the market sees fit.

Liberals tend to believe that the government should strictly monitor construction, and that the government should intervene to prevent housing from being too expensive.

Liberals also believe that those who can't afford housing should be provided with free (or heavily subsidized) housing.

French liberals go as far as saying that “rich neighborhoods should have at least 20% subsidized or free housing for the rich to mix with the poor.”

Energy

Conservatives tend to believe that the free market will determine what energy to use. That is the free market will use coal, and if that turns out being a bad choice, the free market will correct itself and use biofuels if that's a cheap and reasonable alternative.

Liberals tend to believe in government intervention for energy policy.

Liberals tend to believe that if you impose biofuels, it's good for the environment.

Agriculture

Conservatives tend to believe that farmers should sell their produce at whichever price they wish.

Liberals tend to believe that since farm produce is so vital to the nation, farmers will be half-government employees and half-entrepreneurs.

That is the government will subsidize farming, impose price caps. Pay farmers, impose price caps, and farmers get to keep any profits they make, or if they lose money, the government has them covered.

Government structure

Conservatives tend to believe that government is about protecting borders and providing security and that's it.

Government protects people from harm's way and protects the nation against security threats.

But government should not interfere with education or business or healthcare.

Liberals tend to believe that government is not just about security, it's also about “social cohesion.”

That is liberals tend to argue that “if the poor have no chance of making a living, they will become criminals to survive.”

So liberals tend to believe that the government should pay real money to the education system, should subsidize healthcare, should pay for all kinds of programs that help the poor stay afloat.

Law enforcement and the Constitution

Conservatives tend to believe that the legal system should only punish those who “harm other people.”

“No harm, no foul” tends to be their motto, and if you can't prove you've been harmed, you get nothing from the legal system.

Liberals tend to believe that rules aren't just about harming other people.

Rules are also set up for social cohesion (environmental protection, social protection, security prevention etc.)

For example, if you don't pay your taxes (deliberately or by accident) Conservatives tend to believe that you should get away with “light punishment” that is pay your taxes plus a fine or penalty. Liberals tend to believe that not paying your taxes is a serious crime that could land you for many years in jail.
