From the peninsula state of Johor, Malaysia, the Big Dipper is only visible about 9 months of the year. This is because at a latitude of 1 to 3 degrees north, the Big Dipper asterism (group of stars) is not circumpolar. From this location, the north star is barely three degrees above the horizon (less than 2 finger widths held at arms length).
I took this photo while walking around the beaches of Penyabong, Johor. The Big Dipper was hanging low in the sky, there was a huge puddle and the wind was calm. I set my camera low down near the surface of the puddle and composed this shot. A Nisi night filter was used, giving the image a bluish tint and cutting down some of the local light pollution.
