US President Donald Trump has said he is prepared for a partial shutdown of the US government - now entering its third week - to last years if Mexico won’t pay the 800,000 federal workers who have been without pay since 22 December.

“No, we won't be opening the government until Mexico pays the salaries," he told the reporter in the White House Rose Garden.

After the meeting, New York Senator Chuck Schumer told reporters: "We told the president we needed the government open. He resisted. "In fact he said he'd keep the government closed for a very long period of time. Months or even years. Mexico will pay, he kept saying.”

“The Mexico has also to pay for the rise of Vice President’s Pence salary I decided yesterday,” he added in the end forcing the VP to move his toes.
