Zacharias son under investigation

Sir John looked somehow surprised, but surprised in a very Sir John’s way which meant that he didn’t know but the same time he thought that there was some kind of possibility that it would happen.

“Here?” he asked quietly.

“Right here! In the city I mean.”

zac01_400_01Now he looked really upset and he kept looking at the floor instead of Sir John. There was something about him that I didn’t like but after watching for more than half an hour I could not pinpoint it. There was something in the way he carried himself, his expressions, his body language. I didn’t say anything, I just let Sir John to continue the conversation.

“What do you think this lady wants? Why you think she’s here.”

“Well, you see Sir John I suspect that there is something she wants. You see I put Nome, my battler to follow her and he reported back this morning that the woman has a child.”

“A child?” It seemed that both, Sir John and I said the same thing the same exactly time.

“A child!” The man verified still looking at his shoes.

“And I presume you have suspicions about this child.”

“It’s both, the age and the money.”

“What money?”

“My father’s will.”

“I see!”

Zacharias son left a bit after and despite all his gentlemanly ways I still felt uncomfortable with him but still I could not identify what really bothered me.

“You didn’t really like him, did you?” Sir John asked after some time.

“Am I so transparent?”

“Oh no to everybody, just me. Do you want to tell me why?”

“That’s the problem, I don’t know. There is something about him. It was like his body language didn’t coordinate with his mouth. He was saying one thing and his hand were saying another and his eyes …”

“What about his eyes?

“I had the feeling that he was avoiding looking at us. It was like he was dictating a story somebody had told him.”

Sir John didn’t say anything he just moved towards the French window and looked outside into the cloudy sky.

“Yes,” he said after a few minutes, “he lied. But why lie to us? After all he came to us for help, he had no reason to lie.”

“You noticed as well?”

“Of course I did.”

zac02_400“So what are we doing now?”

“Now we are going to gather information and then we will decide what we are going to do.”

“Easy said.” I murmured and I meant it. Where do you start with a man who died and he was respected by everybody for his myths.

“Will you do me a favour?”

“Of course!”

“I need to check something, will you call our friend Chief Inspector Christopher Bennett and arrange for him to come around for dinner tonight?”

“Bennett? What has he got to do with Zacharias?”

“I have no idea but he is into information business and you just never know…” Sir John left the rest of the sentence trailing while putting on his coat and exiting the room leaving me alone.

Chief Inspector Christopher Bennett was a strange character which I didn’t know if I liked him or not, if everything was part of some kind of competition because he was Sir John’s pupil before me. A bully fulfilling all stereotypes of a bully cop and no idea why Sir John thought of him as a success. The man was the essence of the unsophistication. A big fat bully with thick ideas and attitude.

And on top of that I didn’t like his attitude towards me. He always had a way to undermine me. Like I was worthy for absolutely nothing. Leave behind the women and children. That was his attitude. Never took me seriously and somehow always making me feel like a weight for Sir John.

“Chief Inspector Christopher Bennett!”

“Hello Bennett!”

“Well, well. If that’s not a surprise. I suppose Sir John wants something serious so he asked you to call me!” I swallowed hard.

“Will you be free tonight to dine with us?”

“Oh, are you going to be there as well? Keeping notes or something?” And then came his deep laugh.

“Is eight o’clock fine with you, Bennett?”

“Eight will be fine! Keep the food warm lady!” and he hanged up to me.

I was furious. This man has this unique talent with me, to make me furious. I filled – double portion - a glass of whisky, lit a cigar and sat down waiting for Sir John to return from his …whatever was what he was checking.

And of course to embarrass myself a bit more, I fell asleep waking up with Sir John standing in front of me watching me with a very naughty smile on his face.
