I am wondering now while I LOL if that little cardinal bird with papal ambitions perched on a branch knows that there was a time in the history of Christianity when the people elected their bishops and the bishop of Rome was considered the first patriarch among equals, in effect the Pope of the Church and successor of Peter. Perhaps we ought to go back to origins and begin to democratize the cumbersome external apparatus of an institution which is primarily a spiritual reality: the body of Christ and a guide on an ongoing journey in a desert...I wonder if the little bird knows that too having read Dawson's The Making of Europe.

One also wonders if religion bashers of various persuasions realize that a papal conclave is perhaps a tiny bit more democratic than a monarchical system (even a modern one as existent in various European countries) that transmits power and privilege directly from father to son. Churchill had it on target: democracy is the worst system imaginable, except for all the others.

In some Native American Indian cultures the Cardinal is seen as a Symbol of Self Esteem and/or Sexual Awareness.
In or out of Conclave, Cardinals of a Feather do have a tendency to Flock together.

Indeed Leah, but the Pope who just resigned will not be flocking together because he will continue to wear white. He can conly flock together with the nex Pope and that is a bit bizarre: we'll have two Popes that will flock together in the Vatican not one in Avignon and one in Rome. On the other hand, on the positive side, two Popes is a bit more democratic than just one. LOL
