Truth and Ethics as the First Casualties of Political Discourse Truth and Ethics as the First Casualties of Political Discourse

It is common knowledge that the first casualty of a modern political campaign is the truth. Another may well be ethical conduct. In the last year or so politicians of various stripes have offered the younger generations the sad and pernicious spectacle of a political philosophy redolent of social Darwinism which not only ignores the common good and the solidarity which should exist among fellow citizens but proclaims that winning is all and it is a sure sign of intelligence and success, all measured by the amount of money one has stealthily deposited in foreign banks.

We have seen not only our President insulted with slogans such as “he is not one of us,” or “he was not born in the US” but we have also seen his real accomplishments trivialized while at the same time conveniently forgetting the economy in shamble that he inherited from the Bush administration who had within a year squandered a surplus left by the previous Clinton administration.

We now have the Republican challenger, Mitt Romney, who far from disavowing those ethical abuses, keeps telling us that he has business experience and he wants to be our CEO conveniently forgetting that in the entire history of the US we have had only two presidents who were businessmen: one was Hoover who gifted us with the Great Depression of the thirties and that other was George W. Bush who gifted us with the Great Recession of the last five years, so bad that it has taken four whole years to begin to slowly come out of it.

What is most repulsive to most honorable people is the spectacle of a willingness to simply lie and fabricate facts, any facts that helps one’s political agenda. The rationale seems to be: tell a lie often enough and people will believe it. The latest example is that of an ad accusing President Obama of selling Chrysler to “the Italians” (an obvious slur against Italians in general) who in turn are outsourcing the manufacturing of Jeeps to China. All vehemently denied by the CEOs of the Chrysler and the FIAT, but no matter. The ad has not been retracted. This may boomerang on Mitt Romney in Ohio and other places, since one can fool some of the people all the times and all the people some of the times, but one cannot fool all the people all the times, especially on the issue of character. He may well find out today.

It would be too long to deal with each and every one of the nefarious ads that have been presented over several months now, so I will simply list here the major political accomplishments of President Obama. Accomplishments for which he has been given little if any credit for the opposite party. Those facts are not opinions, or rhetorical embellishments (another gross accusation of the Republicans) but facts which can be easily checked out and . They remain facts even when one may in principle disagree for ethical reasons with one or more of such accomplishments. I trust that those who enter a voting booth will ponder such fact before casting their vote. I would suggest that those who may be about their vote, especially those doing so for the first time in their life.

Since President Obama took office in 2008 we have witnesses the following facts:

1.
32 straight months of job growth, adding 5.4 million private sector jobs.

2.
Obama-care or universal health care for all US citizens has already helped 5.6 million people with disabilities, better afford prescription drugs, and 17 million children with pre-existing conditions will no longer be denied coverage.

3.
President Obama believes that a woman’s health choices are personal decisions, best made with her doctor without interference from employers or politicians.

4.
President Obama brought a responsible end to the war in Iraq and brought Osame bin Laden to justice.

5.  President Obama has doubled the funding for Pell Grants and established a college tax credit with helped more than 9 million students and families save money for tuition last year.

6.
President Obama signed 18 tax cuts for small businesses and supported loans to help 150,000 small businesses.

7.
He rescued the auto industry from the brink of collapse saving more than 1 million jobs.

8.
He cut taxes by $3,600 over his first term for a typical middle-class family making $50,000.

9.
He passed Wall Street reform to empower consumers and hold big banks accountable.

10.
He established historic fuel efficiency standards, which will save families $8,200 at the pump per vehicle.

11.
He signed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act to help women fight back against pay discrimination in the workplace.

12.
He repealed “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and believes in supporting marriage equality.

13.
He has a plan to keep moving our country forward for four more years.
