French nuclear facility to shut down after uranium leak
French authorities have ordered the temporary closure of the Tricastin nuclear treatment plant in Provence after a uranium leak polluted the local water supply. France's ASN nuclear safety authority cited a "series of faults and human negligence that is not acceptable" when it ordered the closure following an inspection.
Residents in the Vaucluse region have been told not to drink water or eat fish from nearby rivers since the leak on Monday night, in which 75 kilogrammes (165 pounds) of untreated liquid uranium spilled into the ground. Swimming and water sports were also forbidden as was irrigation of crops with the contaminated water. "We take note of the ASN's decision," said spokesman Hugues Blacher. "We will take steps to ensure that this type of incident does not happen again."
Forgive me for asking a stupid question, but surely they should have taken steps to ensure it never happened in the first place.

Police charge second man in murder of two French students
British police charged a second suspect in the frenzied murders of two French students, which caused shock on both sides of the Channel. London’s Metropolitan Police said they had charged 23-year-old Daniel Sonnex with the murders of 23-year-old students Laurent Bonomo and Gabriel Ferez and with attempting to pervert the course of justice.
Police have previously described the June 29 murders as among the most gruesome crimes they ever encountered. The pair were tied up, stabbed scores of times and the apartment was set ablaze.
Just when you think humanity can't sink any lower you read a news story such as this; it is truly the work of sick violent minds.

Sarkozy pledges to do "everything possible" to contribute to Mideast peace
French President Nicolas Sarkozy pledged that France and the European Union (EU) will do everything possible to contribute to peace and promote mutual trust in the Middle East. He said that France supports Israel's will to restore security, and in the meantime, is committed to helping the Palestinians to have their own state.
"The role of Europe and France is to contribute to peace, to economic development, to political initiatives, by providing military guarantee of security (of Israel and the Palestinians)," Sarkozy said at a press conference after hosting a meeting between Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas at the Elysee Palace.
Another stupid question, but why hasn't France and the EU already been doing everything possible to secure peace in the Middle East?

Angelina Jolie gives birth to boy and girl
Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie has given birth to twins, a boy and a girl, her doctor at a hospital in southern France said on Sunday. Oscar winner Jolie, 33, had the twins by caesarean section on Saturday evening at the Lenval hospital on the glamorous Promenade des Anglais waterfront drive in Nice. Actor Brad Pitt, the twins' father, was at her side.
The girl, named Vivienne Marcheline, weighed 2.27 kg (5 lbs) while her brother, Knox Leon, weighed 2.28 kg. Marcheline was the first name of Jolie's mother, also an actress, who died of cancer last year.
There's no word yet as to whether Jennifer Aniston will be asked to be a godparent.
