Indeed Kant had it on target: the sublime in nature needs to be distinguished from mere beauty. The sublime has the elements of awsomness and danger that beauty as ornament does not possess, and can poetically transform even what is ugly into art. It can be glimpsed especially in the twenty thousand year old cave paintings at Lascaux.
