Car firms cash over Bond
A genteel disagreement about whether James Bond prefers Bentleys to Aston Martin has raised a conversation in the world of luxurious cars. The spat comes as the latest James Bond novel, Devil May Care, is published to mark the centenary of Ian Fleming, the author who invented the spy during the early years of the Cold War.
In the new book, written by Sebastian Faulks "writing as Ian Fleming", Commander Bond is buzzing about in a convertible two-seater Bentley, dubbed R-type Continental. "It's quite nice from a historical perspective, as James Bond drove Bentleys in the books," observes Richard Charlesworth, director of royal and VIP relations at Bentley Motors. "Fleming himself was a Bentley fan and a Bentley driver," continues Mr. Charlesworth, who also oversees Bentley's heritage collection.
I have to admit that there is no way to imagine James Bond driving a …Mini Cooper!

Before checking prices, check for …scorpions
A 12-year-old girl picking up a seedless watermelon from a bin was stung Sunday by a tan, inch-long scorpion at a Wal-Mart in West Virginia that had apparently stowed away in a shipment from Mexico.
Megan Templeton, of Barboursville, was taken to the hospital as a precaution but later released. Her father, William Templeton, said the pain was a little worse than a bee sting.
He initially didn’t believe his daughter when she said she had been stung by a scorpion, but then he saw the critter scurry underneath a box. It was captured by Wal-Mart employees.
Let’s hope that the prices don’t sting …in Wal-Mart in West Virginia also!

Arrested with Sword
Brooklyn kickball team Los Pirates Mechanicos are down one man as of yesterday; Lawrence Jackson (better known as Lance) was arrested for carrying around a rusty pirate sword in Macy's. Unsurprisingly, the NYPD took it for a weapon, not a recreational sports prop.
While the "Free Lance!" comments come in on the team's MySpace profile, the NY Post tosses around labels like "bonehead," "rabble-rouser" and "kook" amongst their descriptive of the Greenpoint kickballer. Jackson was allegedly at Macy's shopping for eyeglasses with his 8-months pregnant girlfriend Teresa. The couple, who were planning to go to McCarren Park for a game post-Macy's, didn't expect any problems from carrying around the giant metal sword (surprisingly, no one had reacted to it on the subway system earlier that day).
Teresa told the paper, "It's metal, but it's a fake sword. It's not like he was going to hurt anyone." Meanwhile, the cops noted that the couple "didn't think there was anything wrong with it. He thought it was a toy. But it's not a toy. It's sharp." Reportedly Jackson frightened some shoppers, and the sword was heavy enough to make a loud noise when he dropped it.
They told him a …hook and he got a …sword!!

Teaching road behavior
A retired teacher drove the wrong way down a Brazilian highway for 8km, scattering holiday traffic and skirting a police roadblock, after turning around because she had no money for the toll. Lidia Vitielo, 58, was approaching a toll booth on the Imigrantes Highway linking Sao Paulo city to the coast on Wednesday night when she found she was short of the 15.4 real fees. The road was packed because of a national holiday but, undaunted, she headed back against the flow of traffic.
Highway police tailed Vitielo and warned other motorists to steer clear. She drove 8km in the wrong direction, passing about 350 vehicles and ignoring a police roadblock, before she stopped, police said.
Vitielo told police in a statement she turned back as she had no toll money. Police said a blood test showed she had been drinking and she would be fined 950 reais.
They should check her pupils as well!
