Be wary of the dictionary.
Watch out for the thesaurus.
Attractions can be quite contrary.
Words can be a kooky chorus.

They sing of 'A's in many ways,
Their 'B's are a disease
That titillate by arcane phrase
To bring good reason to its knees.
The 'C's can please with chocolate
Or give a case of cancer,
'D's can make you desolate
Or be a cute romancer.
'E's and 'F's and 'G's can be
Somewhat entertaining,
'F's quite foul and sometimes 'G'
Leaves nothing for the gaining.
'H' is hell, 'I' -oh my!
'J' is all its own way,
'K' you never can deny
May have feats of Klee.
'L' can give a lovely word,
'M' is often masochist.
'N', a nerd, could be absurd,
'O' a large obstructionist.
'P's and 'Q's are purposeful
And very vaguely querulous.
While 'R's, resourceful,
Frequently are garrulous.
'S', a mess, simply slick, salacious,
Precedes 'T' which can be
Totally tenacious.
'U' might find no peace or glee
Positioned just before 'V'
Which sometimes turns out vicious
While 'W' can trouble you
With fantastic wishes.
'X' can only lead to wrecks,
'Y' goes into yearning.
'Z' can never stack the decks.
It finalizes learning.

"Poetry heals the wounds inflicted by reason." - Novalis (Add a comment)

Here is another comment by the same Novalis, one of the greatest poets of the Romantic era:

"Common Logic is the Grammar of the higher Speech, that is, of Thought; it examines merely the relations of ideas to one another, the Mechanics of Thought, the pure Physiology of ideas. Now logical ideas stand related to one another, like words without thoughts. Logic occupies itself with the mere dead Body of the Science of Thinking. — Metaphysics, again, is the Dynamics of Thought; treats of the primary Powers of Thought; occupies itself with the mere Soul of the Science of Thinking. Metaphysical ideas stand related to one another, like thoughts without words. Men often wondered at the stubborn Incompletibility of these two Sciences; each followed its own business by itself; there was a want everywhere, nothing would suit rightly with either. From the very first, attempts were made to unite them, as everything about them indicated relationship; but every attempt failed; the one or the other Science still suffered in these attempts, and lost its essential character. We had to abide by metaphysical Logic, and logical Metaphysic, but neither of them was as it should be."

--Novalis

Metaphysics is a restaurant where they give you a thirty thousand page menu, and no food.
Robert M. Pirsig

The best thing about the sciences is their philosophical ingredient, like life for an organic body. If one dephilosophizes the sciences, what remains left? Earth, air, and water.

--Novalis, Fragment No. 62

When he to whom one speaks does not understand, and he who speaks himself does not understand, that is metaphysics.
Voltaire

And don't forget the other thing that is left --- the spaces filled with none of the three, the empty space.

We are still clueless about and desperately trying to find out what fills its fabric --- for now it is still the mystery of being.

Once solved though we will simply move on to the next until science answers them all except --- Why?

Sand2008-02-17 08:01:52
Or simply, "Why not?"

Emanuel Paparella2008-02-17 10:29:22

To the bonfire you go Lady Metaphysics. Spielberg has it on target in Shindler's List: the implications of the Holocaust for Western civilization and whether or not it will manage to survive have not yet been properly drawn. Alas May 10 1942 when the books burned and Voltaire was consigned to the bonfire has also been "misremembered."

Sand2008-02-17 10:52:20
There you go again with your beloved bonfire, a creation totally your own that you love to assign to anybody even slightly perceptive of your blatant idiocy. Even Voltaire, who saw clearly the vicious stupidity of organized religion, is somehow burned to warm the cockles of your mummified heart.

Emanuel Paparella2008-02-17 15:30:14
You have the date: Germany May 10, 1942 and begin to unburden yourself of your ignorance; I kind of doubt it since the viciousness goes beyond cognition, but one never knows, it may begin to dawn on you where the blatant idiocy really lies.

Emanuel Paparella2008-02-17 15:41:07

Here above is a good place to begin the unburdening.

Sand2008-02-17 16:17:04
Frankly, I am impressed that what puts ants in your pants is the Nazi attacks on literature rather than the horrors they inflicted on living humans.
Since you are so culturally oriented I wonder if you are equally upset by the multitudes of beautiful Greek and Roman statues of their deities that were smashed by the Christians when they gained access to power. Admittedly marble does not burn too well.

Emanuel Paparella2008-02-18 02:13:06
Indeed, the theory comes first. Those eleven ethical retards who had gone to college theorized and planned and rationalized the Holocaust in two short hours and then executed it very efficiently in two short years. Alas, that kind of totalitarian fanatical personality, the one that needs to have the last word, is found in democracies as well as dictatorships! They proclaim themselves pacificist, but don't you believe it. Look how at how they conduct their discussions and the unfair intellectual strategies they employ.

Sand2008-02-18 06:47:05
The profound stupidity that could accept that only eleven people were responsible for the horrors of Nazism is amazing. Whatever vicious ideas these eleven proposed, assuming that your theory is correct, fell on minds well prepared by centuries of anti-semitic propaganda which was the stock in trade of Christianity. The eleven found a fertile reception for their twisted ideas and the guilt for their success has roots throughout the entire nation.

Emanuel Paparella2008-02-18 16:40:00
Have the voices and the FSM been visiting again? Is that what they told you? Don't you believe them, they are idols of your mind, oops, your computer of meat. Those eleven ethical retards went beyond good and evil, in a dark place unknown even to primitive man. Had you a modicum of knowledge of history you would know that whatever was salvaged from the barbarians after the fall of the Roman Empire was salvaged by the humanizing influence of the monastic orders of the Church and the patronage of art which allowed for the eventual rise of the Renaissance. But you biased obfuscating lenses do not allow that reading I suppose. Pity.

Emanuel Paparella2008-02-18 16:47:17
Surely you will need to have the last word. You may have it. I will not continue wasting my time of day on a hard-wired rationalist with a mind hermetically sealed on issues of religion. Indeed, Aristotle was correct in pointing out to Plato that "totalitarian" personalitied existed even within democracies and in fact they are even more pernicious because less visible in a democratic society. Plato on the other hand had a point in his distrust of atheists in general and their seeming congenital inability to clearly perceive the absolute Good. As I said, you have a lot of ignorance to unburden yourself of and throwing books to the bonfire the way the Nazi barbarians did will not achieve that purpose.

Sand2008-02-18 17:55:36
No one would deny you the recourse to run off to your private closet and mumble to your imaginary version of historical figures when you cannot confront my simple statement that the Nazi horrors were not committed by eleven evil people but were carried out with enthusiasm by a German populace well primed by Christian antisemitism over a period of centuries. If you attempt to deny that you will place yourself in the category of holocaust denial.
