| Slovakia could lose seat in European Parliament Slovakia could lose one of its 14 Members of the European Parliament following voting on a draft amendment to the treaty establishing the European Parliament. The European Parliament has 785 members, and the draft is proposing a cut to 750. The reduction is set to be made in line with the principle of "degressive proportionality", according to which smaller states hold more seats in the EP than they would be entitled to if the system were based purely on population size. Under the amendment, the larger European countries stand to lose more MEPs than the smaller states, while the very smallest - Malta, Luxembourg, Cyprus and Estonia - will retain the guaranteed minimum number of six. Hopefully the European Parliament won't take the salaries of the 35 cut members and distribute it according to "degressive proportionality". Slovakia’s most popular website is Zoznam.sk Zoznam.sk is the most visited website in the country, according to a survey released on October 8. More than 1,464 million real users visited the site during the month of September, according to an AIMonitor survey carried out for the Association of Internet Media (AIM) by Mediaresearch Slovakia, in co-operation with Gemius. In second place was Azet.sk with more than 1.25 million real users, followed by Atlas.sk with 1.15 million. The survey started monitoring website visits (or hits, as they are known) and researching the socio-demographic profile of Slovak internet users in January 2007. I would imagine that Google Slovensko or Sex.sk was in third place, although according to Alexa.com Google was actually number one, Azet.sk number two and YouTube was number three. There's nothing like good statistics. Kia Motors makes its 100,000th car in Slovakia Kia Motors Slovakia made its 100,000th car last Friday at its factory near Žilina. The Korean carmaker launched its Slovak plant in December 2006. The milestone car was a Cee'd_SW station wagon, the newest Kia model. The 100,000th Cee’d is rolled off the plant production line on October 3, the company announced. Kia Motors Europe vice-president Jean-Charles Lievens said that thanks to highly qualified employees, more than 2,500 of whom now work in two-shift production, the company is now producing three models: a five-door version and a station wagon version of the Kia Cee'd, and the Sportage SUV. "In the second half of October, the production of the fourth Cee'd model will start, which will be a sporty three-door version of the five-door Cee'd model," Lievens added, not failing to miss a single opportunity to gain free publicity. Let's hope that the percentage of the 100,000 that will be recalled is very minimal. Slovakia Ovi_magazine Europe EU |
