Don’t let Trump’s tweets mislead you; it wasn’t him or the imprisoned pastor that led Turkey into the abyss of an economic catastrophe. It was Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, his sons, his in-laws, his cousins, his nephews and their lackeys. It is the actions of an absolutely corrupted family of a sociopath dictator to empty Turkey’s vault into their personal deposit safes with a lot of schizophrenic nationalism for an ideological cover.

Also, Turkey’s problems didn’t start with Pastor Andrew Brunson but long ago when Erdoğan started believing his propaganda-machine’s myths that elevated him into the pantheon of the Ottoman Sultans and got really worst when the Turkish people actually allowed him to become their semi-secular prophet.

erdog01_400To start with if the power of Trump’s tweets were so mighty Iran wouldn’t exist, Germans would drive only American Chrysler and Hillary would be in prison. As far Pastor Andrew Brunson, if it wasn’t so serious it would have been ridiculous from all sides.

For 23 years Andrew Brunson quietly served the congregation of the small Resurrection church to about 25 regulars in the ancient city of Izmir on Turkey’s Aegean coast. He taught his children how to scuba dive, organised movie nights and picnics and took pride in coming from a long line of pastors. That’s it. Period. How this man between teaching the gospel to 25 poor souls and scuba diving his sons managed to organize a whole coup against the second biggest army in NATO and the president of the country is either a mystery or we have to do with the biggest strategist in history.

A Turkish-Iranian gold trader, Reza Zarrab, told jurors in a New York federal court in 2013, that Erdoğan authorized a transaction in a scheme to help Iran evade U.S. sanctions. Zarrab was cooperating with U.S. prosecutors in the criminal trial of a Turkish bank executive accused of helping to launder money for Iran. At the time of the alleged conspiracy, Erdoğan was Turkey’s prime minister. The scale of the money laundering and the bribery is enormous. Zarrab, who is cooperating as part of a plea deal, claims to have paid approximately $70 million in bribes to the Turkish economy minister. The bribes greased the wheels on a multi-billion dollar scheme to launder Iranian oil revenue into international markets in contravention of U.S. sanctions.

Later the same year Erdoğan’s sons Bilal and Burak to a similar situation, smuggling oil from Iran and making millions of dollars in bribes. Erdoğan …reshuffled the government, took an official trip to Pakistan and accused …Fethullah Gülen for false accusations. He also dismissed or reassigned thousands of police officers and hundreds of judges and prosecutors - including those leading the investigation - and passed a law increasing government control of the judiciary covering everything and of course his and his family’s involvement.

However, that does only the peak of the iceberg; no big financial deal happens in Turkey without somebody from the Erdoğan family gang enjoys the necessary …baxxis. And of course family member in key positions in the government, the police and judicature always helps. The sultan controls even the thieves and why not, after the change of the constitution into a declaration of authoritarianism with Erdoğan the absolute ruler, the opposition in prison tortured and murdered by his sociopaths in the police and the army and the drama with the coup that became – coincidentally(?) – the excuse to put the country in state of emergency repressing freedom of speech, expression and human rights blaming Trump’s tweets is a bit of a joke.

As far the Americans and NATO, Erdoğan has constantly betrayed them since the first Iraq war, he plays a double game with Russia and Iran as the “other” partners and he has often even cooperate with al-Qaeda  or ISIS in Syria for …profit.

On the surface Erdoğan, is opposed to raising interest rates to cool down the economy and support the currency and has used his recent election victory to impose his unorthodox views on the country’s central bank plus the lack of interest-rate action has coincided with a marked worsening of Turkey’s relations with the US.

But that’s the surface. The truth is that the Turkish economy was a gigantic bubble where some “investors” made huge profits while it was going well and that worked while Erdoğan was bullying his neighbours and the Americans were letting him do it out of long time habit and not because of some kind of strategic plan.

That’s why all it took was a couple of Tweets and a pastor to burn the balloon in hot air.
