Trump's Incompetence Does Not Elevate Bush Legacy
By George Cassidy Payne

In a recent speech the 43rd president alluded to Donald Trump on several occasions. In one part he said, "We’ve seen nationalism distorted into nativism." Elsewhere he remarked, "bullying and prejudice in our public life provides permission for cruelty and bigotry."

trump0001_400I do not accept this as a serious rebuke of Trump. Trump may be an incompetent egomaniac, but he is no George H.W. Bush. Although Trump may eventually go off the rails, the fact remains that Bush did go off the rails on numerous occasions. In Afghanistan and Iraq he led the nation into a quagmire that cost millions of human lives and trillions of dollars. In Cuba he authorized a torture facility for the world to scorn. In New Orleans he failed miserable to respond to one of the most catastrophic natural disasters of the 21st century. And 9/11 was one of the most suspiciously embarrassing defenses of homeland territory in military history.

For all of Trump's delusional and prejudicial notions there is no comparison between him and Bush. Perhaps the worst unintended consequence of the Trump administration has been the whitewashing of the Bush years. Because Trump has been so relentlessly obnoxious, Bush's legacy has undergone a drastic makeover in the eyes of Republicans and Democrats alike. But I find this pathetic nostalgia for criminal mediocrity to be intolerable. Under Bush the United States became viewed as an international pariah state. The total meltdown of our economy almost occurred if not for a desperate bailout of the banks. And the erosion of our civil liberties began to unravel the very fabric of our constitutional democracy.  I simply cannot agree that Trump’s ineptness elevates Bush's disastrous eight years.

Trump is too self-obsessed to be manipulated by any group for too long. Bush was more than willing to be used with sinister precision. He was used to invade foreign countries for oil. He was used to sanction Gitmo. He was used to ensure that our nation's defense shield evaporated on September 11, 2001. And he was used to push through the Patriot Act. What has Trump done that comes remotely close to these crimes?

Of course it is a tragic commentary on the state of American politics that we must evaluate the merit of Trump's incompetence based on the shameless forfeiture of American principles under Bush.
