“Guns don’t kill people, people kill people. Guns are innocent and need our protection.” How do we protect them? “With more guns, of course!” That statement may sound like a joke of sorts, but now that another massacre conducted with an assault weapon has occurred on Sunday in a church in Sutherland Spring, a small Texas town, killing 26 people and injuring scores of others in a few seconds, this is what we are likely to hear once again from the NRA, our feckless politicians, and other gun toting institutions around the country, all in the name of the second amendment. All duly accompanied, no doubt by prayers, memorial ceremonies and a veritable river of crocodile tears.

And this is what we heard verbatim with the second on line man to the presidency House Speaker Paul Ryan and others: “Thoughts and prayers are urgently needed.”

If this argumentation sounds slightly deranged to the ears of sane people, it is because it is. After all, we live in an era when a deranged president, duly elected by other deranged people exercising their democratic electoral rights, sits pretty with a smile on his face in the While House, not unlike a deranged ancient Roman Emperor well pleased with himself. Indeed, those who don’t know their history are condemned to repeat it.

Some outraged responses have already appeared on tweeter pointing out that the victims were in church and already engaged in prayer, and that in itself did not spare them. It may be time for politicians, at least those who retain a modicum of sanity, to offer something more than thoughts and prayers. Let those who have ears, let them hear.
