Photos of an early love
By Ian C Smith

At thirteen I bought my first camera with cash saved
from tips hustled hefting bulging suitcases
train to bus station for city holiday-makers
at our end-of-the-line boring bayside town.
All summer waiting for trains I composed pictures.

photo1_400These tiny monochrome delights artfully framed,
film bought, developed, printed, via the chemist’s,
ate my tips at a rate of two suitcases per photo.
I made notes of the circumstances of each shot,
comparing them critically with the results.

My little brother posed wearing boxing gloves,
the only present our father gave me, leading to
what I had in mind, modelling the gloves myself,
an angled muscular effect copied from The Ring
that dismayed, my broomstick arms over-exposed.

My brother, who was cherished by our parents,
took the photo directed by me dreaming of fame.
I had read about Man Ray, Doisneau, Kapa,
no selfies now, no camera decades since my escape,
but love for chiaroscuro, soft focus, lingers.
