I’ve spent the last 11 years observing workers, some clear patterns seemed to emerge. Here are some mistakes that I’ve seen workers do, the mistakes are in no particular order.

1.      - Acting like the victim to get ahead

This is by far the biggest mistake I’ve seen a lot of workers do. Can’t get the work done? Rather than being lectured on how to get the work done, some workers think that being victims gets them ahead. Some will complain about chaos surrounding their private lives while others will claim to be the victims of office politics. Some really are victims, as in when they are very competent but getting sabotaged, while some orchestrate victimhood to get ahead as in orchestrating scenes where they are publicly humiliated so they can get ahead.

The temptation of being a victim at the workplace can be big for some, and it is the main source of headaches when it comes to office politics. When leading a company, make sure you have clear guidelines on faking victimhood.

2.   work01_400_01   - Not talking to the people you’re replacing

What’s it like working for your boss? What are the clients like? Does the company have any weird policy? Is Jesus their role model, or it is more like Satan? These questions are legitimate questions you will want to ask the person you will be replacing.

If on your first day of work you get an ugly employee profile of the people you are replacing, your employee profile will be ugly soon enough. If your company won’t give you the previous guy’s contact number or won’t allow you to contact them, you have reason enough to worry.

3.     -  Accepting a job with a terrible commute

You live way up town, and the job’s way downtown. You almost get into several car accidents just so you can reach your workplace.

4.     -  What’s your company’s career track for workers?

If your company prides itself in not providing health insurance for workers despite being an accident-prone workplace, or has no measures to retain employees, or automatically firing workers after a year or two, or make you work like there’s no tomorrow, you’re probably in the wrong place.

5.     -  Working for a boss with Obsessive or Compulsive disorders

If your boss is complaining about the slightly crumpled sheet of paper but doesn’t bother reading your report, you have reason to worry.

6.      - Working with people who have completely different values

It’s always good to know what the job market is like. Different companies have different values when it comes to work culture and to relating to each other and to clients. For some, being aggressive and militaristic is the norm, while for others respect is the norm. If you’re the aggressive type, you know the one who can’t say “please” and “thank you” you don’t want to work with the people who think respect is the way to go. The opposite is also true, if you believe in respect, you don’t want to work for a militarized organization, the kind where people get offended when they hear “thank you.”

7.     -  You’re counting the days

If you’re bored at your company and nothing is being done about it, time to move on.

8.     -  Your company has weird hiring procedures

Three job interviews, written examinations, psychological tests, medical tests, height and weight standards, profile picture with a white background. They’ll kick you out as soon as you gain a few pounds.
