Crucifixion in Christmas Crucifixion in Christmas

I was hoping that in this special time of the year I will ease from my brain - at least for a while - and that I will hook myself with some great feelings. I needed a break. I was hoping I will charge my batteries as to prepare myself for new battles with feelings that overwhelm me every time I open a newspaper, turn on the TV or when I communicate with my associates and friends with whom I share a same worldview and fight the same battles.  I felt in advance that this whole "love and understanding" fantasy will not last for too long, or as I already wrote - it's fake.  Wars didn't stop because of Christmas, hatred didn't disappear, nothing was replaced with love for a baby Jesus, and when the words of hate are coming from those who supposedly are the representatives of the goodwill then I have to ask myself - where is this world really going?

sin01A few days ago I’ve read a very disturbing article, released in some Greek newspaper, where one of the Greek Orthodox Church bishop’s was using that kind of language that made me blush, even though I am hundreds of miles away. A man, a representative of so called morality and a spiritual institution, a man who supposed to be a moral vertical in society, literary was spitting at one particular part of the same society, inviting his religious flock to do the same without hesitation! A human being would never expect this amount of hatred from an "official representative" of God in this world!

The occasion was the legalization of the same-sex civil relation in Greece. Fortunately, despite the opposition, the Greek Parliament passed a law 23.12.2015, perhaps with a little help from the EU, because two years ago, Greece was punished by the decision of the European Court of Human Rights, for restricting the rights of the LGBT community. Although the church bells didn't "sadly rang" as in a funeral as the extreme right Golden Dawn leader invoked to the finalization of the law, still a bitter taste remains in the mouth.

Almost simultaneously, as if the religious representatives of the Greek Orthodox Church and the Croatian Catholic Church, had agreed in a pact, on the Christmas sermon in a city in Croatia, the bishop called same-sex relationship cruel and decadent  and this message was broadcasting in the central news of the national television!(By the way, since 2003, Croatia recognized and allowed same-sex unions as a form of unregistered cohabitation, and in 2014 Croatia has allowed registered or life partnership by the Civil Partnership Act of the same sex, even though "curators of our souls" are trying to subvert the law in a referendum in December 2013 (interestingly, again during the time of "love and understanding").

This Christmas homophobia from the altars should ring as big alarm bells! Not only that the messages of hatred should not come from the representatives of any religion (as if we naively forget that all the previous and present wars – including terrosris attavcks – happen in the name of religion and in the name of God, though I doubt if any of them has the Creator on direct telephone line) but this is like a call to crucifixion of “sinners", and the sin is - what? The feeling and the body determined by birth? A human being eager for love? Who declared that as a sin? Not God, but the other man! Who gave him this right? Who has the right to deny any human being their rights?  No one! Least of all the call for lynching should never come from institutions that have to spread love and understanding! Especially at Christmas time! But, well, they don't even maintain the illusion, they are stealing Christmas spirit like the Grinch!

What kind of world do we live? With wars, poverty, refugee crises, homophobia and the strengthening of the extremism and the fascism, the church - by the logic of common sense - has to be the lighthouse and the sanctuary. With all seen, there is no common sense there. Fake charity that didn't last even for Christmas, and with these messages sent in the holiest time of the year I'm afraid to predict what the next year will be. I can only hope that common sense will not leave those who, like me, are not religious, who believe in different values, who are another type of "sinners", declared by the so-called God's representatives, but they are humanists, human beings and they always have been a supporting hand for all those convicted to this kind of crucifixions.

Osjećaj i tijelo određeno rođenjem?

U kakvom to svijetu živimo?

Ah, the problem of evil! I may be wrong but it seems to me that human nature would not be conscious of evil, did it not also aspire to what is good. And that explains why the Christmas angel did not bring peace to earth in the manner of a gift from Santa Claus wrapped up in shiny thin foil, rather it promised it to those of "good will" who aspire to it and work for it courageously rather than wallowing in misery at its absence. That is to say, when the good and the peace and the social justice that flow from them are missing, we ought to perceive it as a problem, of course, but also suspect that we may be part of the problem rather than part of the solution.

Lincoln said that the first and last Christian died by crucifixion two thousand years ago and his name was Jesus. I suppose it can also be asserted nowadays that Lincoln too was the first and the last great Republican in these United States. But it was Chesterton who articulated a much better insight when he wrote that “the great ideals of the past failed not by being outlived, but by not being lived enough. The Christian ideal has not been tried and found wanting. It has been found difficult; and left untried.” It may be necessary to curl our sleeves and try it.
