Flickering Lights

The
Ship's
Foghorn
Bellowed
Like a
Wounded
Beast from
Deep within the
Bowels of the
Earth that emerges
Into the mist.

img_1500_northern_lights_400The
Slimy
Creeping
Green fog
Sliding over
Barrels,
Turrets and
Gun-barrels.

The
Muffled
Choking
Sound of a
Cornet punching
Through the thick
Air from the local
Creaking sailor's
Bar at the
End of the
Quay.

As she
Snapped
Her garter,
And he ran
His hand over
His stubble like
A travelling
Salesman;
Considering
A thousand
Possibilities
Wrapped in a
Thousand lost
Beer-soaked,
Sawdust
Stained
Nights.

The
Flashing
Red and
Blue neon
Lights
Glowed
Through
The flimsy,
Tattered,
Taupe
Coloured
Blinds.

The radio
Crackling
Strains of
Old dated
50's slick
Crooner
Music.

He was
Getting too
Old for this
Racket;his
Freighter
Sailed the
Next day.

He
Vacuumed
All the blow,
And scrounged
Around,and found
A solitary six-pack
In the bar-fridge.

He couldn't
Get to sleep;
He could hear
The hooker
Banging
Next door,
As loud as
The headache
That was
Banging
In his
Head.

The two
Mingled
Somehow,
And melted
With the smooth
Dean Martin
Crooner music.

He was about
To unzip again,
But lost interest;
The fatigue of
The night,
Of the year
Seeping into
His bones.

He lay
On his back
Under the
Peeling
Wallpaper,
And rusted
Ceiling fan.

The
Blue and
Red neon
Lights,and
The green
Fog,and
Bellowing
Ship's
Foghorn
All mingled
Like an
Urban
Serenade;
A serenade
The somehow
Kept him
Company
Among the
Millions of
Flickering
Lights.

He liked
It that way;
Anonymous.

One
Anonymous
Soul amongst
Millions of others;
But he felt more
Authentic that way.

Floating
Through
Life among
The flickering
Lights.
