The Innocence of Man

Lost in
Glowing
Embers in
The fireplace,
Chestnuts
Cracking open,
Releasing a
Delicious aroma;
I drift back to
What it would
Have been
Like in the
Age of the
Innocence
Of man

img_1410_400When
Once
They
Warmed
Their
Hands;
As the
Pungent
Aromatic
Smoke
From the
Campfire
Smudged
The chalky
Blue sky.

While
Under the
Smell of
Burning
Fragrant
Mountain
Wood:the
Huntsman
Stalked his
Prey amongst
The crackling
Twigs in the
Forrest.

The
Shaft
Snapped
From
Trembling
Bow;
Snatched
Up in
One fluid
Movement
From
The
Silver
Quiver.

Flints
Peeling
Deer skin
Away to
The sound
Of tribal
Drums,and
Shepherd
Flutes.

The women
And children
Holding hands,
Dancing
Around the
Campfire
Like a daisy
Chain.

Young men
Impressing
The girls of
The tribe
With the
Virtuosity
And athleticism
Of their dance.

Old
Men with
Laughing
Brows
Furrowed
With age
And wisdom
Hold council,
And survey
The their
Domain;
Their
Short
and
Fruity
Life.

When
Suddenly,
I'm brought
Back to
The present
By the sound
Of a whistling
Kettle.

As i
Consider
That we may
Have lost
Something
Priceless
And tender,
Back in
The age
Of the
Innocence
Of man.

Suggestive poem echoing the power of primeval innocence and "originative thinking." Had not primitive man left his paintings in the caves, had he not been a poet, we as a species might not be around to celebrate our origins. Food for thought! Thank you Nikos, and pass the wine.
