An den Mond (Version 2) - Under the Moon
By Goethe
Translated by Lawrence Nannery

Once again you fill up valley and shrub land
Quietly, in brilliant nebulousness,
And dissolve my entire soul
Once and for all,

Spreading over all my domain
You soften your gaze
As the mild eye of a loved one
Surveying my fate.

Each reminiscence of a cheerful or troubled time
Fills my heart, wanders back and forth
Between joy and sorrow
In my loneliness.

Flow on, flow! Dear flood!
Never again will I joyous be,
Since jokes and kisses have passed away,
And faithfulness as well.

Indeed at one time I did have it ―
What is so valuable,
What one can never forget,
Forever to his torment.

Roar, flood, down the length of the vale
With no rest or repose.
Rush, and whisper your melody
In accompaniment to my song,

In winter's night
When you overflow your banks in anger,
Or, in consonance with Spring's Magnificat
You swell the nascent bud.

An den Mond (2)  -- Goethe
p. 2

Blessed be the one who hides himself
From all the world, forbearing hatred,
Holding a friend to his bosom,
And with him enjoying

Whatever ― unknown by people,
Not even suspected ―
Strolls at night
Through the labyrinth of the human heart.

 An den Mond
Version 2
(Auf Deutsch)
by Goethe

Füllest wieder Busch und Tal
Still mit Nebelglanz,
Löset endlich auch einmal
Meine Seele ganz,

Brietest über mein Gefild
Lindernd deine Blick,
Wie des Freundes Auge mild
Über mein Geschick.

Jeden Nachklang fühlt mein Herz
Froh- und trüber Zeit,
Wandle zwischen Freud und Schmerz
In der Einsamkeit.

Fliesse, fliesse, lieber Fluss!
Nimmer werd ich floh,
So verrauschte Scherz und Kuss,
Und die Treue so.

Ich besass es doch einmal,
Was so köstlich ist!
Dass man doch zu seiner Qual
Nimmer es vergisst!

Rausche, Fluss, das Tal entlang,
Ohne Rast und Ruh,
Rausche, flüstre meinem Sang
Melodien zu,

Wenn du in der Winternacht
Wütend überschwillst,
Oder um die Frühlingspracht
Junger Knopsen quillst.

Selig wer sich vor der Welt
Ohne Hass verschliesst,
Einen Freund am Büsen hält
Und mit dem geniesst,

Was, von Menschen nicht gewusst
Oder nicht bedacht,
Durch das Labyrinth der Brust
Wandelt in der Nacht.
